Burnout & Stress Counselling

If work is taking over your thoughts, leaving you exhausted or making it hard to switch off, counselling can give you space to understand what is happening. I offer burnout and stress counselling in Buckhurst Hill for adults who feel overwhelmed, depleted or stuck. Together, we can look at what is driving the pressure, what needs to change and what could help you feel more like yourself again.

When work follows you home

You finish work, but your mind is still there.

Maybe you’re thinking about an email you should have sent, something said in a meeting, or everything waiting for you tomorrow. You’re tired, but your mind won’t settle.

Even when you get a few hours to yourself, you’re still thinking about work. After a while, you start wondering why you can’t switch off like you used to.

Perhaps you’ve always coped well with work, even when things got busy. Now you’re feeling overwhelmed at work and getting frustrated with yourself for struggling.

Stress can creep up on you. You carry on, get through another week and hope things will calm down soon. But the pressure is still there.

Counselling can help you:

  • Look at what is leaving you drained
  • Make sense of what you are thinking and feeling
  • Find practical ways to manage overwhelm
  • Work out what may need to change
  • Notice when anxiety is adding to the pressure

You don’t need to know what needs to change yet. We can start with what is happening now.

Signs of burnout and work-related stress

Burnout can affect your ability to work in different ways.

You may still get through the day and meet deadlines, even though work feels much harder than it used to.

Or you may find it hard to concentrate, make decisions or manage tasks you once handled without much thought. For some, even starting the work day feels difficult or impossible.

Burnout can show up in different ways. You might recognise:

  • You feel drained
  • Your motivation has dropped
  • Brain fog makes it harder to focus
  • Decisions feel harder than they used to
  • You feel overwhelmed by things you used to manage
  • Stress and anxiety are taking over

You might recognise several of these changes, or your experience might be quite different. In counselling, what matters is understanding what has been happening for you and how it is affecting your life.

How burnout can affect life outside work

Work can become part of how you see yourself. Your role can bring structure, purpose and a sense of identity.

When work is taking too much out of you, the effects can follow you home. You might still be thinking about work in the evening or find you have little energy left for anything else.

Decisions can feel harder, and you may start questioning what you actually want from your life now.

Our work might involve:

  • Exploring what has changed
  • Looking at what is adding to the pressure
  • Working out what you want, rather than what you feel you should want
  • Considering whether a change in direction feels right
  • Making sense of a career change or redundancy

Burnout and stress counselling is not just about helping you cope with the same pressure. It can also help you work out what needs to change.

How burnout & stress counselling can help

When you feel overwhelmed, even small decisions can become difficult.

My approach combines counselling with therapeutic coaching. We can look at how you reached this point and where you want to go from here.

My integrative approach also means we can use different ways of working, depending on what you need.

Our sessions might include:

  • Understanding how your thoughts, feelings and actions affect each other
  • Exploring patterns which may come from earlier experiences
  • Looking at the connection between how you feel physically and emotionally
  • Working out what matters most to you
  • Finding practical tools you can use outside counselling

We can find a way of working which suits you and what you need from counselling.

Recovering from burnout

When you are already exhausted, trying to do everything you think you should be doing can add more pressure.

You may already have an idea of what needs to change. Making those changes can feel much harder when you are overwhelmed.

If you are wondering how to recover from burnout, it can help to understand what is happening and where the pressure is coming from.

This might mean:

  • Working out what needs your attention first
  • Looking at what can wait
  • Getting clearer about what you need right now
  • Finding a way forward which feels manageable

We can look at what feels most important to you and where you would like to start.

My approach to burnout & work stress counselling

You may be wondering what happens when you sit down with a counsellor. You do not need to have everything worked out or know where to start. We can begin with what is going on for you now.

My style is warm, calm, open and honest. You will have space to talk without judgement, but I will not simply sit and nod along. When it may help, I will gently challenge you too.

Our sessions may include:

  • Questions which help you look at things differently
  • Practical tools when they may be useful
  • Conversations which help you explore what is going on
  • Humour when it feels right

If you have been searching for a burnout therapist, counselling can give you time to make sense of what is happening and work out what you need next.
