Counselling for Women in Midlife
Midlife can bring several changes at once, and suddenly the life which used to feel familiar no longer feels like yours.
Perimenopause or menopause may be affecting how you feel. Your children may be leaving home. A relationship may be changing. Work may be shifting too, whether through redundancy, a career change or the sense you want something different. After years of knowing what everyone else needed, you may now be asking what you need.
I’m Sinéad Lyons, and I offer counselling for women in midlife in Buckhurst Hill. Together, we can make sense of what is changing, reduce some of the overwhelm and work out what you want from the next stage of life.
When several parts of life change at once
You used to cope.
Work got done. Family life kept moving. Problems came up, and you dealt with them.
Now something feels different.
You may be feeling lost in life without knowing why. Decisions feel harder. Motivation has dropped. Your sense of self may feel less solid.
For many women in midlife, several changes are happening at once. Perimenopause may be starting as your children become more independent. A relationship may be shifting. Work may no longer give you the same sense of purpose.
A midlife crisis can sound dramatic. What you may be feeling is simpler: the life which worked for years no longer fits.
Counselling for women in midlife gives you space to work out what has changed and what you need now.
We can work on:
- Understanding why you feel overwhelmed or stuck
- Exploring a loss of identity or purpose
- Making sense of changes in family, work or relationships
- Understanding how your roles are changing
- Deciding what needs attention first
Perimenopause and menopause
Perimenopause and menopause do not happen in isolation.
Other parts of life may be changing at the same time. Your children may be leaving home. Ageing parents may need more from you. Work may be shifting. A relationship may feel different.
You may also notice anxiety, brain fog, mood changes or a loss of your usual sense of self.
Then comes another question.
Is this menopause? Stress? Grief? Exhaustion? Something else?
Often, there is no neat answer.
You do not need a diagnosis before starting perimenopause counselling with me. We can work with what you are experiencing now.
My work is menopause-informed. I have completed CBT training with the British Menopause Society covering menopause and hot flushes. I am also an affiliate subscriber.
Counselling does not replace medical care. Your GP can support physical or medical concerns. My role is to help with the emotional and personal side of what is happening.
As your perimenopause therapist and menopause counsellor, we can explore:
- Anxiety, overwhelm and changes in mood
- Brain fog and difficulty making decisions
- Changes in confidence or your sense of self
- Relationship strain during perimenopause or menopause
- Feeling unlike yourself or unsure who you are now
Empty nest and changing identity
You can feel proud of your children and still struggle when they leave home.
Both can be true.
Years of routines can change fast. The house feels different. Your role changes. Time opens up, yet you may be left wondering what to do with it — and who you are now.
Coping with an empty nest is not only about missing your children.
The bigger shift can be what happens to your role. When daily life no longer revolves around being needed in the same way, you may start asking, “Who am I now?”
Some women describe empty nest depression. For others, it feels more like being flat, lost or unsure what gives life meaning now.
Counselling for women in midlife can help you explore the change without judging how you think you should feel.
Together, we can work on:
- Making space for loss and mixed emotions
- Understanding how your role has changed
- Exploring who you are outside parenting
- Looking at changes within your relationship
- Building a life with more room for your own needs
When work changes your sense of self
Midlife can also change how you see work.
You may be thinking about a career change at 40, 50, or even 60. You may have been made redundant. You may have reached a career crisis after years in the same field.
Work can give you far more than income. It can give structure, status, routine and identity.
When work changes, your sense of who you are can change with it.
Coping with redundancy can involve more than finding another job. You may need time to understand what the old role meant to you before deciding what comes next.
The same applies when you choose the change yourself. A new direction can feel exciting and unsettling at the same time.
We can explore:
- Understanding what your career has come to mean to you
- Working through fear around starting again
- Making sense of redundancy or a major career change
- Deciding what you want from work now
- Exploring whether counselling, coaching and a new direction, or a mix of both, would help
You do not need to know exactly what is wrong
Many women think therapy should start with a clear problem.
It does not have to.
You may only know something feels off, or life no longer feels as manageable as it once did.
Perhaps you feel constantly overwhelmed. Maybe [anxiety] is growing. You may feel stuck in life and frustrated with yourself for not being able to “just get on with it”.
You may have tried talking to friends. You may have spent hours trying to reason everything out alone.
More thinking does not always bring more clarity.
My approach to integrative counselling draws on different ways of working. We can look at thoughts, feelings and patterns from the past. We can also look forward.
I will listen, but I will not simply nod along.
My aim is to think with you, gently challenge what may be keeping you stuck and help you find a clearer direction.
Our work may include:
- Understanding patterns which keep repeating
- Looking at how thoughts, feelings and actions affect each other
- Exploring the mind-body connection
- Using practical tools between sessions where useful
- Identifying what matters most to you now
Find clarity about what comes next
A midlife identity crisis does not mean you have failed. Life has changed. Your old answers may no longer work.
You cannot go back to the life you had. The question now is what you want the next stage of life to look like.
I offer counselling for women in midlife in Buckhurst Hill, supporting you through perimenopause, menopause, empty nest changes, shifts in identity, relationships and changes in direction.
You do not have to know where counselling will lead before you begin.
We start with where you are.
From there, we can clear away some of the noise and work towards more clarity about who you are and what you want next.

You do not need to know exactly what you need or what you want to say before getting in touch.
