Counselling for Men in Midlife
Counselling for men in midlife in Buckhurst Hill gives you space to make sense of what is changing in your life. You may be questioning your career, relationship, identity, purpose, or what comes next. I offer counselling and therapeutic coaching to help you understand what has changed, cut through the noise, and work out what matters to you now.
When the life you built no longer feels like enough
You may have spent years knowing what came next.
Work. Family. Responsibilities. Repeat.
Then something shifts. Your career may no longer fit. Your relationship may be under strain. You may be facing separation or divorce. The children may need you less. Retirement may be getting closer.
Or nothing dramatic has happened. You just know something feels off.
You may be feeling lost in life without knowing why. From the outside, life may look fine. Inside, your old sense of direction is fading.
My midlife counselling for men in Buckhurst Hill gives you space to face the questions you may have been putting off and make sense of what is changing.
- Understand what has changed and why it matters to you
- Work out what you want from your life now
- Find more clarity when decisions feel hard
- Make sense of who you are when an old role has changed
- See which part of your life needs attention first
Is this a midlife crisis?
The words midlife crisis can make serious questions sound like clichés.
You may have searched for male midlife crisis, identity crisis or even midlife crisis therapy while trying to put a name to what you feel.
Your career, family role, or relationship may have shaped your identity for years. When one part changes, your sense of self can change with it.
A midlife identity crisis can feel like a loss of direction. It can also make you question what matters now.
- Explore a loss of identity without judgement
- Understand which roles have shaped how you see yourself
- Notice patterns which may be keeping you stuck
- Work out what matters to you now
- Build a stronger sense of who you are beyond old roles
For many men, this loss of direction first shows up at work.
When work has been part of who you are
Redundancy can take away far more than a salary.
You may have spent decades knowing where you needed to be each morning. Work gave structure to the week. Your role gave you routine, purpose and a clear answer when someone asked what you did.
Then it stops. Suddenly, Monday can feel no different from Saturday. The routine which once shaped your week has gone.
If you are coping with redundancy, facing a career crisis or considering a career change at 40, 50 or even 60, one question can quickly lead to another.
“What job comes next?”
“What do I want from the rest of my life?”
Counselling can help you:
- Make sense of the loss which can come with redundancy
- Take time to think before making your next career decision
- Explore what work has meant to your identity
- Work out what life after redundancy could look like
- Decide what you want from work at this stage of life
If work is at the centre of the change, redundancy and career change counselling can help you explore the practical and personal impact in more depth.
What if you are questioning more than your career?
You may be questioning your relationship. Family life may have changed. Your children may need you less. Retirement may be approaching.
You may have spent years knowing your role. Now, parts of life which once felt clear may feel less certain.
This is where feeling stuck in life can become frustrating.
You know something needs attention. You just cannot pin down what.
Friends may offer advice. You may have tried to reason it out alone. But going over the same thoughts does not always bring more clarity.
Counselling can help you:
- Understand what may be leaving you feeling stuck
- Look at what has changed in your work, relationships or sense of self
- Work out what matters most to you now
- See your situation from a different perspective
- Identify which part of life needs your attention first
Counselling does not have to mean talking in circles
You may think you should be able to work this out yourself.
You may also want more than somewhere to talk. You want focus. You want to understand what is happening and work out what to do with what you discover.
My integrative counselling approach does not force you into one method.
We can look at how thoughts, feelings and actions connect. We can explore old patterns when they affect life now. We can also focus on your priorities and practical steps forward.
Think of it as putting on a new pair of glasses. Your life may look the same, but you can start to see it from a different angle.
- Understand patterns which may be shaping how you respond
- Look at a problem from more than one perspective
- Use practical tools outside the counselling room
- Understand your priorities more clearly
- Turn greater self-understanding into practical next steps
When you want a more future-focused approach, coaching and new direction work can help you focus on where you want to go from here.
When stress and anxiety start taking over
You may be struggling with more than a loss of identity.
Your mind will not switch off. Motivation has dropped. Decisions feel harder. You feel frustrated with yourself for not “just getting on with it”.
Anxiety and overwhelm can make it harder to work out what you want next.
Sometimes the first step is creating enough space to think. With more space to think, it can become easier to see what needs your attention.
- Understand what may be driving your stress
- Find ways to manage overwhelm
- Get clearer when decisions feel hard
- Use practical tools to help you cope
- Create enough space to think more clearly
If anxiety has become the main issue, anxiety counselling can help you focus more closely on what is driving it and how to manage it.
If work is adding to the pressure, burnout and work stress counselling can look more closely at what is happening there.
Finding direction does not mean changing everything
Starting again at 40, 50 or 60 does not have to mean throwing everything away.
Nor does questioning your life mean every part of it needs changing.
Sometimes the answer is change. Sometimes it is understanding what you already have from a different angle.
My approach combines counselling with therapeutic coaching. We can look at what has brought you here while also thinking about where you want to go next.
- Take time to think before making a major decision
- Work out what you actually want next
- Find smaller steps when a big change is not needed
- Build more clarity before choosing what to do
- Move towards a life with more direction and purpose
How I work with men in midlife
I am a Counsellor and Therapeutic Coach and a member of the BACP.
Before becoming a therapist, I spent 28 years working in healthcare. I later went through a major midlife change. With the support of a coach, I worked out what I wanted and found it in myself to make the change. That experience helped shape the way I work today.
Therapy with me is warm, grounded and open. I listen, but I will not simply nod along. Gentle challenge can help you see something which has been hard to see alone.
- Counselling and therapeutic coaching brought together when needed
- A calm and non-judgemental place to think
- Gentle challenge when another view may help
- Practical tools alongside deeper understanding
- A forward focus built around what matters to you
